Somewhat to the film makers surprise, research uncovered extensive archival materials showing homosexuals throughout the history of Australia - and what extraordinary stories there are to be told. The documentary reveals the depth and range of gay and lesbian experience. From the convict times when homosexuality was considered a sin against God, through the turn of last century and into the 1960's when it was viewed as a psychiatric condition, and finally to more recent times when homosexuality has become a political, culture and personal issue.
The Hidden History of Homosexual Australia artfully weaves archival material with interviews to go some way in dispelling the ignorance and complacency about the past. It also questions how far they really have come, or if are they living out the same patterns and problems of the past.
