22 years ago the identical twins Isabelle and Denise were born. But already as a kid Isabelle knew she was different from the other girls. Deep down inside Isabelle knew she was a boy, born in a girl’s body. “I am going to be a dad when I grow up”, says 6-year-old Isabelle in a family video clip. A few years later Isabelle changes name to Sam. From then on Sam has been forced to explain who he really is, over and over again. His mother was bewildered at first, and thought it was merely a passing phase. But from the moment she realised that he was absolutely serious, she has fully backed Sam and his right to be true to his inner self. Standing by his side is also his twin sister Denise, Sam’s guardian angel and confidant. Denise has seen his suffering firsthand, and in the film she tells about the bullying Sam has had to put up with throughout his life. The film follows Sam from childhood to high school graduation. During this time, he has gone through breast removal surgery and received testosterone injections.
